Belgrade, 11 September 2007 – UN-HABITAT SIRP Programme and its partners will be organizing a series of events to mark this year World Habitat Day on October 1st.
Every year, the first Monday of October has been designated by the United Nations as the World Habitat Day, to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. This year, the theme of the occasion is A safe city is a just city, focusing on the mounting threats to urban safety and social justice, particularly urban crime and violence, forced eviction and insecurity of tenure, as well as natural and human-made disasters.
Main focus of this year celebrations in Serbia will be on Urban Safety and Security of Tenure, raising awareness on significant themes for the youth, the most vulnerable and our communities in general.
From Holland to Mexico, from India to Israel, many cities in countries across the world will be celebrating World Habitat Day. A list of countries and partner activities is available on www.unhabitat.org

Valjevo
Police Officers visiting primary and secondary school
Primary School “Vladika Nikolaj Velimirovic” in Valjevo will host Police officers who will organize small exhibition of technical equipment. Besides opportunity to meet with pupils, Police officers will put the emphasis on the traffic safety.
In the Secondary School of Economics, pupils will meet with Police officers who are dealing with drug prevention and receive concrete advices on this issue.

Cacak
Stop Drugs – Cacak safer town
Sports Tournament – Football game “We are all winners”, extreme sports and free climbing
The event is organized within the activities planned for awareness rising campaign on prevention of drug abuse targeting Cacak youth.
Special guests will be sportsmen originally from Cacak, who have reached success at national level.
The Municipality of Cacak, the Cacak Safety Board and the Police Department are currently engaged in drafting of the City Safety Strategy and the Action Plan on Substance Abuse Prevention, with the support of UN-HABITAT SIRP Settlement and Integration of Refugees Programme.

Safe together – open space for dialogue between the community and police
The Municipality of Kraljevo, the Police Department and local primary schools are organizing 3 day event to strengthen the dialogue between police officers and the community, especially with primary school students.

The exhibition on the City Square
The Police Department will organize the exhibition of the technical equipment used by Kraljevo Criminal and Traffic Police at the central city square and use the opportunity to open dialogue with the community. This is an open event for all citizens, including students from all primary schools coming as special guests.

Award ceremony for the best drawing and best paper drafted on the theme “My friend Policeman, how does he make me feel in my city?”
Police department visit at the primary school “IV kraljevački bataljon”, where pupils will present their drawings and papers drafted for their guests from Police department. Besides award winning ceremony, Police officers will emphasise the importance of the traffic safety.
